The four gaps mice actually use

Dryer vents, sill plates, garage door corners and utility penetrations account for most of the entries we seal on Long Island.

Mice are not getting in through the front door, and they are almost never getting in through a hole anyone has noticed. Four openings account for most of the entries we seal.

The dryer vent

The flap sticks open, or the sleeve has pulled back from the wall. Both leave a clean run into the joist bay.

The sill plate

Where the frame meets the foundation there is often a gap of a few millimetres, running the length of the house.

The garage door corners

The seal wears at the two bottom corners first, and a garage is usually one uninsulated wall away from the living space.

Utility penetrations

Cable, gas, water and air-conditioning lines are drilled oversized and sealed with foam, which mice chew through in an afternoon.
