Ticks dry out fast in sunlight, which is why an open, mown lawn is close to the worst habitat available to them and the woodland edge twenty feet away is close to the best.
Treat the edge
The first three feet of woodland, the leaf litter under shrubs, and the base of a stone wall are where the population lives. Treating those uses a fraction of the product and removes most of the risk.
Change the edge
A three-foot band of wood chip or gravel between lawn and woods is the single most effective thing a homeowner can build, and it does not wear off.
